Your insider’s guide to Hong Kong

Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Hong Kong

Rachel Read

Remember the dark old days of vegetarian dining, where a stodgy veggie pasta or soggy salad might be your only options on an otherwise meat-packed menu? Thankfully, the food scene in Hong Kong has come a long way in recent years; these days, there are a plethora of vegetarian dining options available throughout the city – and we’ve rounded up four of our favourites.

Chi Lin Vegetarian

Chi Lin Vegetarian
If you thought vegetarian dining was a modern phenomenon, think again – its origins can be traced back to ancient times, with the first reports of Chinese vegetarian meals going back as far as the 6th century, while meat-free diets have long been staples of both Taoist and Buddhist beliefs. This tradition is honoured and brought into 21st century Hong Kong at Chi Lin Vegetarian, located inside the city’s serene Nan Lian Garden, right next to the stunning Silver Strand Waterfall.

Serving classic Chinese cuisine with a contemporary touch, all the food here is made with seasonal fresh vegetables, fruits, mushrooms and tofu. Well-priced lunch, dinner and tea sets are available, with the vegetarian dim sum being a particular standout, and the unique Zen-like atmosphere somehow makes everything taste just that little bit better.

Green Common

Green Common
An ideal location for Central office dwellers or stressed-out shoppers looking for a healthy bite, Green Common is both a plant-based grocery stop and café – with all the ingredients for the deli’s dishes available to buy in-store, should you feel inspired to cook up a veggie feast at home.

The light and nutritious menu features a crowd-pleasing line-up of salads, sandwiches, super-food bowls and cold-pressed juices available for dine-in or takeaway. With other signatures including Hainan Runaway Chicken and Shanghai Chilli – all made from plant-based proteins – these meals are delicious enough to have even the most dedicated carnivores rethinking their diets.

Dining at Murasaki

Dining at Murasaki
Japanese cuisine isn’t all sushi and sashimi, and nowhere demonstrates this better than Dining at Murasaki. This innovative Causeway Bay restaurant fuses Japanese and French cuisine to deliver fine dining with a difference – as showcased by their creative vegetarian omakase menu.

Featuring the finest Japanese produce in innovative, stunningly plated dishes, current highlights include beetroot tartare sushi (pureed beetroot served on sushi rice with deep-fried nori) and a mushroom trilogy starring Japanese honshimeji, eryngii and shiitake mushrooms. With the vegetarian omakase menu changing regularly depending on what’s in-season, Dining at Murasaki can always be relied upon to spark some surprising culinary fireworks.

Grassroots Pantry
Grassroots Pantry has been at the forefront of Hong Kong’s vegetarian dining revolution. Founded by executive chef Peggy Chan, the restaurant’s philosophy is simple – to create food that heals, made from the freshest, sustainable and most nutritious plant-based ingredients.

Its beautiful, light and airy Hollywood Road space perfectly matches the clean and contemporary food on offer, with breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch all available.
