In a city that’s always buzzing, there’s nowhere quite as buzzing as Central – but thankfully, there are plenty of great spots around the district to take a breather, somewhere to refuel and recharge with something delicious.

Whether it’s been a hectic day of work, sightseeing or shopping, here are three of our favourite cafés in Central to grab a coffee and cake… or croissant… or cookie…


Fuel Espresso

With two locations in the heart of Central – at The Landmark and IFC malls – Fuel Espresso is the ultimate in convenience. Beloved by local office workers for their quality of coffee and speed of service, Fuel provides plenty of seating at both venues if you’d rather linger than join the queue for a quick grab-and-go.

Fuel’s expert baristas are known for serving the best espressos in town (founder Sanjay Ponnapa is descended from several generations of Indian coffee planters after all), but the rest of its drinks menu – including a perfectly-balanced masala chai latte and ultra-rich hot chocolate, all served in their signature turquoise tea-ware – more than holds its own. Meanwhile, the daily-rotating cake selection provides the ideal accompaniment for your java; the carrot cake, with its gorgeously moist sponge and generous layer of cream cheese frosting, is always a winner.

The Cupping Room Located at the bottom of the Central-Mid Levels escalator, this Cochrane Street spot has become a honey-pot for coffee connoisseurs – and once you’ve tasted The Cupping Room’s brews, you’ll understand why. Their beans are sourced directly from the best ethical farms around the world and bought in-season before being roasted locally, resulting in a coffee menu that changes constantly but remains high-quality all year round – whether it’s an espresso from Ethiopia or a single origin cuppa from Kenya. The array of freshly baked pastries – with everything from brownies, croissants and kouign-amanns – will also tantalise your taste-buds. However, it’s the cruffins that have become something of a dessert cult. These indulgent croissant-muffin hybrids come in a variety of flavours – peanut butter and milk jam, matcha red bean, and pink peppercorn chocolate – but don’t leave it too late, The Cupping Room’s pastries always sell out.

A café that doubles up as a bar – what’s not to love? This grown-up spot on Peel Street boasts an intimate, chilled-out atmosphere and stellar coffees – courtesy of speciality Australian-style roasters Redback, whose passion for selecting, blending and craft-roasting shines through in their brews (although there is a carefully-curated wine and beer menu if you fancy something stronger).

Those with a sweet tooth are served well here too, with a fresh selection of muffins, bagels and croissants available daily. But what we’re obsessed with are the giant cookies from local bakers Sugar Sisters – chewy, gooey and fully loaded with rich chocolate chunks (plus pretzels, potato chips and toffee in their epic Souped Up Sister variety), they’re the ultimate cheat day treat.
